Indian Express Daily Current Affairs Analysis – April 5, 2026

Strengthening the Indian Navy – INS Aridhaman and INS Taragiri:

Strengthening India’s Sea-based Nuclear Deterrence, two key warships were inducted into the Navy in the presence of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. The first is INS Aridhaman, India’s third nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN). Belonging to the Arihant class, this 7,000-ton vessel is larger than its predecessors and is built with the capacity to carry more missiles (K-15 and K-4). It is a vital component of India’s ‘Nuclear Triad‘ (the capability to launch nuclear strikes from land, air, and sea). The second is INS Taragiri, an advanced stealth frigate built under Project 17A. The use of over 75% indigenous components in its construction is a testament to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat‘ (Self-reliant India) initiative.

International Relations and Strategic Developments:

In view of the recent tensions in the Iran region, Azerbaijan has announced strategic support for India. Permitting India to use its airspace for the safe evacuation of citizens through ‘Operation Sindoor‘ is a sign of the strengthening diplomatic ties between the two nations. On the other hand, the US government has imposed a 100% ‘Ad valorem’ duty (tax based on the value of the product) on patented medicines. This not only impacts international pharmaceutical trade but also reflects the US strategy to achieve self-sufficiency in the supply chain.

Legal and Banking Updates (CLAT & UPSC):

The government has proposed the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) Amendment Bill 2026 to accelerate the insolvency resolution process. Through this, a new mechanism called ‘CIIRP‘ has been introduced, which allows for the resolution of disputes out of court with the consent of 51% of the creditors. In the banking sector, Punjab National Bank (PNB) organized ‘Soldierathon 2026‘ as part of its 132nd foundation day celebrations to pay tribute to soldiers.

United Nations Peacekeeping (UNMISS):

The efforts of the Indian Army as United Nations Peacekeepers (Blue Helmets) in geographically challenging areas like South Sudan are commendable. India consistently ranks among the top three Troop Contributing Countries (TCC) to the United Nations, playing its part in establishing international peace.
