Idealism: An Analysis of Educational Philosophy
Idealism is one of the oldest and most influential schools of thought in the philosophy of education. It is based on the fundamental principle that the “World of Ideas is the Ultimate Reality.” While Western thinkers like Socrates, Plato, Kant, Herbart, and Froebel developed this philosophy, in India, it was strongly supported by figures such as Swami Vivekananda, Sri Aurobindo, and Dayananda Saraswati. According to Idealism, the universe is constructed through mental or spiritual forces rather than material substance (Matter). Therefore, this doctrine stands in complete opposition to Materialism. Idealists believe that the ultimate goal of education is the attainment of three eternal and universal values: “Truth, Goodness, and Beauty” (Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram). Here, ‘Truth’ represents intellectual knowledge, ‘Goodness’ denotes moral conduct, and ‘Beauty’ signifies spiritual bliss.
In the educational process, Idealism views the school not merely as a factory for teaching literacy, but as a sacred center for spiritual growth and cultural transmission. The school must mold the student into a noble individual within a disciplined environment. As Plato stated in his famous work, ‘The Republic,’ true knowledge is not like the shadows perceived through the senses; it is obtained only through intuition and logic. According to Idealists, knowledge does not come from the outside; it resides within the mind from birth (Innate Ideas). Education is simply the process of recalling those things already latent in the mind (Reminiscence). Hence, the ultimate aim of education is self-realization and the attainment of a Perfection of Personality.
Regarding teaching methods, Idealists prioritize techniques that stimulate mental reflection, such as discussions, lectures, and the ‘Socratic Method’ (Dialectic Method). Herbart suggested providing systematic knowledge to the student through formal steps of instruction, ranging from ‘Preparation’ to ‘Application.’ Concerning the teacher’s role, as Froebel famously noted: if the school is a garden, the student is a plant, and the teacher is the ‘Gardener.’ The student should look up to the teacher as a role model and develop self-discipline through the teacher’s Impressionistic Influence (Impressionistic Discipline). Idealism advocates for ‘Ethics’ and supports the Mother Tongue as the medium of instruction to pass culture down to the next generation. Ultimately, the greatness of Idealism lies in looking past physical limitations to recognize the divinity within every child, transforming them into a moral and spiritual force.
