Information and Communications Technology Practice English – Set 1
ICT (Information and Communication Technology): Comprehensive Information and Importance
In today’s modern era, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become an integral part of our lives. Whether it is education, medicine, business, or administration, no field can function without ICT. Especially for candidates preparing for AP DSC, APPSC, UPSC, and other competitive exams, ICT is a crucial topic. Today, on the Exam Champs platform, let’s learn in detail about what ICT is, its components, and its uses in the field of education.
What is ICT? (Definition of ICT)
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is not just about using computers. It refers to a collection of all types of technological devices used to Create, Store, Transmit, and Manage information.
It can be understood by breaking it down into three words:
- Information: The data or knowledge we collect.
- Communication: Transferring information from one place to another.
- Technology: The devices (Hardware) and programs (Software) that simplify the above tasks.
Main Components of ICT
Five main components are required for an ICT system to function properly:
1. Hardware
Physical devices that can be seen and touched are called hardware.
- Input Devices: Keyboard, Mouse, Scanners, Microphones.
- Output Devices: Monitor, Printer, Speakers, Braille Embosser (for the disabled).
- Processing Unit: CPU (Central Processing Unit) – known as the brain of the computer.
- Storage Devices: Hard Disk, Pen drives, RAM (Temporary memory).
2. Software
A set of programs that direct how the hardware should work.
- System Software: Operating Systems (Windows, Linux, Android).
- Application Software: MS Word, WhatsApp, Browsers (Google Chrome).
- Assistive Software: Specifically designed for the disabled (NVDA, JAWS, Screen Readers).
3. Data
The raw information processed by the computer. This can be in the form of text, images, audio, or video.
4. Network & Connectivity
The medium required to share information. For example: Internet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Satellite communication.
5. People (Human Resources)
The people who use this technology and the programmers who develop it.
The Role of ICT in Education
It is essential for teacher aspirants (AP DSC/TET) to have a command over ICT. ICT helps tremendously in transforming a classroom into a digital classroom.
- Visual Learning: Explaining lessons through images and videos helps students remember them for a longer time.
- Smart Classes: Teaching can be made interesting through Interactive Whiteboards.
- E-Learning: Education can be accessed from anywhere through portals like SWAYAM and DIKSHA.
- Open Educational Resources (OER): Study materials available for free on the internet.
ICT for Inclusive Education
ICT is like a boon for Inclusive Education. Assistive Technology helps Children with Special Needs (CWSN) learn on par with general students.
For Visual Impairment:
- Screen Readers: They read out the matter on the computer screen (e.g., NVDA).
- Braille Embossers: They print text into Braille script.
- Magnifiers: They enlarge the letters for viewing.
- OCR (Optical Character Recognition): Converts printed text in books into digital format.
For Hearing Impairment:
- Live Captions: Displays spoken words in video as text.
- Visual Signaling: Using light signals instead of sounds.
For Locomotor Disability:
- Sticky Keys: For those who cannot press two keys simultaneously.
- Trackball Mouse: For easy use by those who cannot move their hands properly.
- Speech-to-Text: Software that types what is spoken.
Key Technical Terms to Remember
From a competitive exam perspective, candidates must remember the following keywords and their meanings:
- URL (Uniform Resource Locator): The address of a website.
- Cloud Storage: Online storage methods like Google Drive.
- Search Engine: Tools to search for information like Google and Bing.
- DAISY: A digital audio book format designed for the disabled.
- Operating System (OS): The software that gives life to a computer (e.g., Windows).
