Information and Communications Technology Practice English – Set 5
1. Basic Computer Operations
Computer usage begins with keyboard operations. Not only for general users but also for individuals with visual impairments, Touch Typing is taught—a method of identifying and typing keys by touch without looking. In the Windows operating system, several important shortcut keys make work easier:
- F2: To rename a file.
- Alt + Tab: To switch between different open programs.
- Windows + D: To go directly to the desktop.
File Management is another crucial aspect of Windows. Basic skills include creating folders, as well as copying, cutting, and pasting files.
2. Ease of Access
The Windows operating system includes an ‘Ease of Access’ center specifically designed for people with disabilities. Key features include:
- Magnifier: Enlarges the text and items on the screen for those with low vision.
- Narrator: Reads the on-screen content aloud.
- On-Screen Keyboard: Assists those who cannot use a physical keyboard due to physical disabilities by allowing them to type using a mouse or touch.
- High Contrast: Provides the option to change screen colors for those who have difficulty distinguishing between colors.
3. Application Software – MS Office and Other Tools
MS Office is vital for educational and office-related tasks.
- MS Word: Used for preparing documents and taking notes. Visually impaired students can easily read Word documents using screen readers.
- MS Excel: Used for data management and mathematical calculations.
- Calculator: The built-in computer calculator is useful for everything from basic arithmetic to scientific calculations.
- Calendar: The Windows Calendar helps with time management and scheduling meetings.
For linguistic needs, tools like Google Input Tools can be used to type easily in regional languages like Telugu.
4. Internet Applications and Search Engines
The internet is a goldmine of information. Using Google Search effectively is an art. Students should know search techniques such as using “Double Quotes” for exact information and the minus (-) sign to exclude unnecessary results.
Google Drive is a cloud storage tool where we can store files securely. This ensures data remains safe even if our computer fails. Files can be shared with others using settings like ‘Anyone with the link.’
5. E-mail Operations
E-mail is essential for professional communication. One should learn how to attach files in Gmail, ‘Star’ important emails, and identify unsolicited ‘Spam’ mails. The ‘Drafts’ folder, which saves emails before they are sent, is also very useful.
6. Speech Synthesizers and Assistive Technology
For the blind and visually impaired, Speech Synthesizers (Text-to-Speech) are like oxygen. Screen readers like NVDA and JAWS turn every character on the computer screen into sound. On Android phones, ‘TalkBack’ performs this function.
Additionally, Adaptive Devices are available for those with physical disabilities:
- Trackball Mouse: Those who cannot move their hands can move the pointer by simply rotating a ball with their fingers.
- Refreshable Braille Display: Converts on-screen text into Braille in real-time.
- Joysticks & Switches: These assist those with severe disabilities in operating a computer.
7. Online Learning and Social Media
Currently, teaching and learning are not limited to classrooms.
- Online Meetings: Platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams allow students to attend classes from anywhere in the world. Features like ‘Screen Share’ and ‘Chat’ contribute to interactive learning.
- Social Media & Podcasts: Knowledge can be expanded by watching educational videos on YouTube and listening to Podcasts on apps like Spotify.
- WhatsApp & Telegram: These can be used not just for chatting, but also for sharing study materials and group learning.
ICT and Assistive Technology are turning disabilities into opportunities rather than obstacles. With proper training and technical knowledge, everyone can achieve success through equal educational opportunities. This technology plays a pivotal role in Inclusive Education.
