28 April 2026 – National & International Current Affairs Analysis
India is taking significant strides toward strengthening its transportation infrastructure. Under the National Waterways Act, 2016, there are 111 designated National Waterways (NW) in the country, of which 32 are currently operational. However, the Budget 2026-27 aims to operationalize 20 new waterways over the next five years.
Vision 2047: The government aims to double the share of water transport from 6% to 12%. To achieve this, the ‘Jalvahak Cargo Promotion Scheme, 2024’ provides up to 35% reimbursement of operating costs to vessel operators. NW-1 on the Ganga and NW-4 on the Krishna-Godavari rivers remain the backbone of regional inland trade.
In international trade, India and New Zealand concluded a historic Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in a record 9 months. This deal is significant as it formally recognizes Ayurveda and Yoga for trade. To protect domestic farmers, India has kept Dairy Products on the ‘Exclusion List.’ Andhra Pradesh is set to benefit immensely, particularly in marine exports (shrimp), fresh fruits, and the pharmaceutical sector.
In public sector news, Shri Dilip Kumar has been appointed as the new Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of SAIL. Meanwhile, Andhra University (AU) is celebrating its centenary. Vice-President Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan released a commemorative coin and stamp to mark 100 years of the institution. Notably, Andhra Pradesh emerged as a leader in 2025-26, accounting for 25% of the country’s proposed investments, showcasing rapid state development.
